The season has started for our senior squad and they have got off to a great start. Barton RUFC played a friendly pre-season against Old Yardlians RFC (Midlands 2).
The final score was Barton 36 – Yardlians 5, a great score line to get the season started.
Here is an overview of the game from 1st Team captain Tom Robinson.
Thanks to all who played today. We have set ourselves a benchmark to which we must aspire for the rest of the season.
It is the best start we could have hoped for. The play in certain phases was outstanding and has made me realise that we have the talent and enthusiasm to not only survive in the Midlands 3 league, but to compete with the best of them.
There are so many positives and so many people I could mention; but I particularly want to focus on two of the try scorers - Ian Ford and Jon McCall. These guys have been second team players for most of their time at Barton. However, the tries they scored were classic for their position – Ford with a beautiful grubber kick and chase and Jon as a 'right place at the right time' pass, with a great turn of speed to finish.
These are the sort of headaches I really want the selection team to have.
It all starts with training fellas. As I said today at the end of the game; whether you see yourself as first team, second team, third team or aren't even sure - we train as a squad. We need to play the same style of rugby no matter which team we end up playing for. Inevitably payers will move between first, second and third teams throughout the season.
There are no 'sure fire' places for anyone. Get to training and compete for where you want to play. Let’s build on the promising start we have made.
