The club’s committee and coaching team have been busy making preparations for the new season. The club is buzzing and we are ready to take on the new season. Peter Weedon has made the following new appointments which we are all thrilled about. Mike Traynor will take over as 1st Team Captain, supported by Jonny Leason as 1st Team Vice Captain. Tom Robinson will take over as Club Captain.

Mike joined the club three years ago and has been a regular player since he joined. Mike is a natural leader, leading from the front and by example – perhaps qualities that were honed by his military background. During the last difficult campaign, Mike helped to keep the troops rallied – always smiling and always giving everything to the cause. Mike is an ever present at training and as a player he goes from strength to strength playing in any role that the club requires .It was little surprise that he was voted as last year’s player of the season. I am sure he will be a popular appointment within the club

Jonny comes from solid rugby stock, playing most of his career at Burton Rugby Club. He has also been part of the County set for many years as a player from junior rugby through to the current Vets side. He is also an outstanding Physio and again has supported the County side in this capacity. Jonny has a tremendous knowledge of the game and is able to read a game well and feedback tactically what needs to change during and after a game. He will be a massive asset to Mike, the rest of the team as well as myself, both on and off the pitch.

Tom is one of Barton’s Stalwarts. Tom was last year’s captain and did a tremendous job holding the squad together through a difficult season. These efforts earned Tom a well-deserved “Club man of the tear award” to add to the previous year’s player of the season award. Despite reaching another milestone this year, Tom is still an outstanding front row forward, and also represents Staffs Vets side. He is already starting to outline a blue print to develop our off pitch events. These events and this role are key to developing the squad and the club and ensuring we move forward as one. Tom will be a star in this role.
